A Shared History in Brunei and Borneo

The presence of Sikhs, Punjabis, and Sindhis in Brunei and the wider island of Borneo can be traced back over a century. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, individuals from these communities arrived as part of the colonial-era workforce, serving in security forces, administration, trade, and business. Over time, they established themselves as respected members of society, contributing to both economic growth and cultural diversity.

Sikhs, with their tradition of service and discipline, became well known in security and law enforcement roles across Borneo. Punjabi families maintained their heritage through language, music, and cultural practices, while Sindhi traders brought with them entrepreneurial skills that supported commercial development in the region. Together, these communities enriched local life while building bridges with Brunei’s multicultural society.

Accountability

Transparency and responsibility are central to how SAIB is run. Annual accounts are audited by an independent Honorary Auditor, and financial limits are in place to ensure proper governance. SAIB is a non-political body, dedicated solely to its mission of supporting culture, society, education, and sports.

Ordinary members enjoy full voting rights, while Associate and Honorary memberships are available for supporters and those recognised for exceptional service.
